House Discusses Two Sales Tax Expansion Proposals

Last week , the House Taxes Committee discussed proposals that would expand the sales tax to clothing. One of the proposals discussed, HF 2551 was laid over for possible inclusion in a tentative fourth omnibus tax bill. The second proposal, HF 2163, would not only expand the sales tax to clothing, but to some legal, repair, financial, funeral, and salon services, as well as tattoo and body piercing. HF 2163 will likely be discussed at upcoming Committee hearings.

State estimates suggest expanding the sales tax to clothing would bring in about $400 million in additional revenue , but both proposals would use the revenue to reduce the overall sales tax rate and create a clothing sales tax credit for low-income filers. During the hearing, Chairwoman Ann Lenczewski (DFL-Bloomington) suggested discussion continue after the budget forecast was released.

STEP-UP Seeks Volunteers for Mock Interviews

STEP-UP is seeking volunteers to conduct mock interviews with youth, ages 16-21.These mock interviews serve as a fun and exciting part of the work readiness training that helps prepare students for their summer jobs. Last year STEP-UP placed over 600 youth in meaningful summer jobs with 131 local employers. Their goal this year is to secure 700 summer jobs.

This is an exciting opportunity to help prepare Minneapolis youth for successful futures. Volunteers will conduct 3 interviews (10 minutes each) between 4:30 and 6:00. Afterwards, you are invited to stay for refreshments in order to provide a networking experience for our talented young people.

To participate or receive more information, contact Sara Durhman at sdurhman@achieveminneapolis.org.
