Minnesota earns ‘healthiest state’ honors once again
Minnesota once again ranks as the healthiest state in the nation, according to United Health Foundation’s annual state health rankings report. Minnesota has ranked first in health 11 times since the rankings began in 1990, and it has never ranked lower than second. The 2006 edition of America’s Health Rankings was released today by the United Health Foundation, together with the American Public Health Association and the Partnership for Prevention.

“It is no accident that Minnesota is again the healthiest state in the nation," Governor Pawlenty said. "Minnesotans take a personal interest in their health and well-being. We are also fortunate to have world-class facilities and dedicated professionals working to promote healthy living. But we shouldn't rest on past success. We need to continue our health care reform efforts and work to continually improve the health of every Minnesotan."
First-rate health care adds to the quality of living in Minneapolis region. The area offers its residents and visitors the most modern and up-to-date medical facilities and health care anywhere. Thanks to the presence of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, 75 miles south of Minneapolis-St.Paul, Minnesota has an international reputation for superb health care. But the Mayo Clinic is far from the state’s only world-class medical facility.
A few factors of note:
- Minnesota's highest performance in the State of Caring Index has continued to be in the health category, beating the national average in all indicators.
- To date, 94.8 percent of Minnesotans have health insurance coverage, compared to the national average of 84 percent.
- The University of Minnesota Hospital was responsible for the first open-heart surgery in 1954, and is recognized as a leading organ transplant center.
- More than 75 percent of the Minnesota Department of Human Services' budget is devoted to health coverage programs.
Excellent hospitals, clinics, counseling services, rehabilitation centers and nursing homes make the pursuit for superior health care in this area relatively trouble-free. Area physicians, dentists, nurses and other health care providers, with access to state-of-the-art and updated equipment, furnish the very best medical service to the community. Additional health care and health-related support available in the region includes health clubs, sports medicine, physical therapy, mental and behavioral rehab, alternative therapies, and chiropractic services.
