Marketing Communications Internship
Position: Marketing Communications Internship
Department: Communications
Type: Temporary Part-time/Flex-time
Immediate Supervisor: Director of communications
Timeframe: May to September (with a potential to extend)
Location: Downtown Minneapolis
Function
To provide assistance to the director of communications in the day-to-day marketing and communications efforts geared to promote and build exposure for the Chamber’s events and initiatives. Intern reports to the director of communications.
Desired Education and Experience
The ideal candidate will either be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree (senior-level students preferred) or be a recent graduate in mass communications/media, communications, journalism, English, marketing, liberal arts or a related field. In addition, the ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience with communications and marketing through coursework, campus leadership positions, volunteer opportunities or paid positions.
Core Qualifications and Competencies
- Possess strong written and verbal communications, including strong writing, editing and proofreading for a variety of marketing platforms (email campaigns, e-newsletters, social media, SEO/SEM, blogs, print, web copywriting, etc….)
- Experience or coursework in professional applications of social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, YouTube, Pinterest, etc…., to build Chamber’s social media presence.
- Working knowledge or experience with Google Analytics or similar web analytics. Some experience with html, PhotoShop, etc…. desired.
- Experience writing and preparing media materials for distribution through electronic and traditional channels. Preference given to candidate who has experience writing and distributing media materials through online channels to build SEO, keyword usage, etc…
- Well-organized and detail-oriented.
- Creative self-starter.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently on a variety of communications projects.
- Preference given to candidate who can work approximately 25 hours per week during regular business hours.
Responsibilities
- Assists in providing varied marketing communications services under the supervision of the communications director to achieve communications goals and meet objectives. Responsibilities include writing and supporting a variety of media and communications materials including web copywriting, e-newsletters, e-blasts, social media, news releases, pitch emails/letters, brochures, direct mail, feature stories and media kits to generate maximum exposure and achieve Chamber’s goals.
- Experience with social media strategy, ideally in a business setting, such as Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, YouTube, Pinterest, etc….
- Brainstorms and implements PR strategies to generate maximum exposure for Chamber activities, announcements, special events, services, products, etc… Develops media lists, including local business bloggers, and assists with building media relationships where appropriate.
- Responsible for proofreading copy, artwork and proofs to ensure all work completes the standard approval process.
- Help at events as needed. May include taking pictures/video, volunteering, etc…
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Office applications. Experience with blogging software or online content management a plus.
