Mayor Rybak Outlines

Supplemental 2009 Budget Proposal

Despite facing $30 million in state funding cuts, Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak announced this week that his revised 2009 budget for the City of Minneapolis will not include significant cuts to public safety or public works.  The proposed budget, which will now be considered by the City Council, includes cuts to every City department. While every effort was made to reduce job losses, the magnitude of the needed cuts means that staff reductions are unavoidable. In the Mayor’s revised budget, he called for 59 positions to be eliminated, about half of which are management positions. Of those 59 positions, 33 are currently filled.

Minnesota Business Day at

the Capitol set for March 18

Business Day at the Capitol gives you the chance to share your views and concerns directly with state policy-makers. Join us March 18 in St. Paul as we represent companies from our community alongside businesses from across the state. Participation is especially critical this year given the tremendous focus on balancing the budget in the midst of the national recession and legislative consideration of the Governor’s proposed Minnesota Jobs Recovery Act.

Headquarters for this event is the Crowne Plaza St. Paul-Riverfront, 11 East Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul. Two sessions are offered to accommodate schedules. Session I runs from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and Session II runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.  Both sessions join together at noon for a lunch program where the Governor traditionally gives an address. Cost for the day, including a continental breakfast, lunch, meeting materials and transportation to and from the Capitol, is $60.  For registration information, click here.

Promotes Home Ownership in

Foreclosure-Affected Neighborhoods

Mayor R.T. Rybak approved funding, adopted by the City Council, for the Minneapolis Advantage program earlier this month. The funding for the program will go to help rebuild the housing market in key neighborhoods (see map) with high levels of mortgage foreclosures. The new funding, which amounts to $2 million, will generate 200 loans for eligible and qualified buyers for the purchase of homes in specific targeted neighborhoods of the City.
