    Top five metro Chambers join to support transportation bonding

    The Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce has joined with four of Minnesota’s largest local Chambers of Commerce to endorse the Metropolitan Council’s application to the state’s economic development fund to support the Southwest LRT. The powerful collaboration from this group of Twin Cities area business leaders emphasizes how critical the Southwest LRT is to Minnesota jobs and businesses.

    Top business organizations in the Metropolitan Twin Cities area now firmly supporting expansion of the light rail as part an interconnected multi-model transportation system.

    Executives from the three largest chambers of commerce told lawmakers Wednesday they endorse building out the transit system, including the proposed Southwest Light Rail Transit line which will run from Minneapolis to Eden Prairie.

    76 percent of Minnesotans polled agree the state would benefit from expanded public transportation. The same poll showed that 69 percent would like to use public transportation more often.

    'Sometimes we hear about people who are not taking transit,' Todd Klingel of the Minneapolis Regional Chamber remarked. 'But we found that the majority would take transit if transit were available to them, and that came out of this poll.'

    On the Southwest line specifically, 61 percent of those polled statewide supported state spending on the project. In the metro area 64 percent agreed with that idea.

    Itasca Project report shows multi-billion dollar “ROI” for comprehensive MSP transit system

    A report commissioned by the Itasca Project looking at the Minneapolis-St. Paul region’s proposed transit system shows a “return on investment” of between $6.6 billion and $10.1 billion in total direct benefits, on a $4.4 billion investment, if a comprehensive transit system is built in the Twin Cities by 2030.
